Waterspin has established a commercial partnership with a Danish company
for the distribution in Italy of this innovative type of carrier, which differs from extruded types not only in the polymer used (PE instead of HDPE), but especially in its manufacturing method and support geometry.
These elements, known as Mutag BioChip 30™, feature a unique paraboloid shape surrounded by a reinforced perimeter ring for wear protection. The protected surface areas achievable inside each chip are significantly greater than those provided by standard carriers, enabling considerable savings in both the volume of plastic material required (the same protected surface area can be achieved with a smaller volume of carriers) and in the electrical energy needed for aeration and mixing.
The Mutag BioChip 30™ also features a very thin profile, which ensures excellent diffusion of nutrients and oxygen into the biomass. It has no dead zones, guaranteeing that the entire surface is available for the growth of attached biomass.
For process calculations, Mutag BioChip 30™ presents unique characteristics, meaning the quantity and resulting active surface area to be considered in the design of a biofilm-based treatment plant may differ from the parameters used for standard HDPE carriers. For this reason, we recommend consulting Waterspin’s technical office for appropriate evaluations.
