Mytex immersed flat sheet MBR membranes

The Mytex flat sheet membrane technology for MBR applications consists of a PES (polyethersulfone) membrane integrated into a high-strength fabric. This robust and durable material is resistant to damage, even under maximum possible suction pressure.

MBR stands for “Membrane BioReactor,” a wastewater treatment process that combines biological treatment (activated sludge) with membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation. Unlike conventional systems that rely on sedimentation, MBR systems use membranes for a more efficient and compact filtration process.

Mytex membranes filter particles based on size, effectively removing suspended solids, macromolecules, and bacteria with a molecular weight greater than 300,000 Daltons. They are suitable for both municipal and small-scale industrial applications.

The Mytex filtration units are immersed in the liquid to be treated and operate in an OUT-IN configuration. This means that filtration occurs from the outside of the fiber to the inside, so suspended solids are retained on the membrane’s outer surface, while only the permeate (clarified water) passes through to the inner side and is then collected and discharged.

To control and minimize the natural loss of permeability during the filtration process, the units are equipped with an air scouring system. This system creates turbulence near the fibers, which prevents the buildup of high concentrations of suspended solids and maintains performance efficiency.

Each flat sheet membrane in the Mytex filtration unit is flexible, backwashable, and features a high void volume between layers to prevent clogging. The unique bonding technology—combining ultrasonic welding and chemical adhesion—ensures the membranes retain suspended solids even in the event of a tear. This multilayer laminate acts as a reliable barrier, effectively trapping biomass on the membrane’s outer surface.

Multiple Mytex sheets are assembled into larger units called membrane blocks (Mytex membrane blocks). Several blocks can then be combined into a full filtration unit, which can be customized in size based on customer requirements.

Depending on the size of the block and the number of blocks mounted on a single frame, MBR filtration units with surface areas ranging from 20 m² to 650 m² can be configured.
